Excursion

Sertão do Ribeirão by bike

This full-day cycling excursion offers a memorable journey through the southern reaches of Santa Catarina Island, combining natural beauty, rural traditions, and local culture. Departing from Campeche, the route follows scenic roads past Lagoa do Peri and Armação. Some sections include steep climbs, but the effort is rewarded with striking views of lush vegetation and the shimmering hues of the Atlantic Ocean.
The ride continues into the protected Lagoa do Peri Conservation Unit, reaching the rural village of Sertão do Ribeirão. This part of the island is known for preserving centuries-old customs, with roots tracing back to 18th-century Azorean settlers. The region is characterised by small-scale agriculture, artisanal production, and a strong sense of community. Here, participants stop for a tasting of locally distilled cachaça and a conversation with local producers.

The itinerary also includes scenic viewpoints overlooking the island and — depending on the season — a visit to a working manioc flour mill. A refreshing stop at a natural waterfall provides the chance for a short swim. The route then descends to the coast at Caiacanga, a peaceful settlement noted for its beaches and shellfish farming.

The final stop is the historic village of Freguesia do Ribeirão da Ilha, where Florianópolis’ Azorean heritage is visible in the well-preserved colonial buildings. After a coffee or a visit to one of the traditional local restaurants, the tour returns to Campeche.

Covering around 40 km of cycling and 3 km of walking, this moderately challenging tour offers an active and rewarding way to experience the landscapes, flavours, and traditions of southern Florianópolis.
