Half day Flavours of São Paulo

This tour offers an immersive introduction to São Paulo’s rich culinary landscape, inviting visitors to explore two important gastronomic and cultural landmarks: the Mercado Municipal de São Paulo and the Centro de Tradições Nordestinas (CTN). The tour begins with the flavours and aromas of the Mercado Municipal, housed in a striking neoclassical building inaugurated in 1933. Located in the historic centre of the city, the market features high vaulted ceilings, elaborate columns and beautiful stained glass by Conrado Sorgenicht Filho depicting scenes of agricultural production in rural Brazil. A favourite shopping destination for celebrity chefs, it offers an abundance of quality produce, sausages, cheeses, fresh fish, exotic spices and imported delicacies. Among the most famous culinary experiences are the pastel de bacalhau (codfish fritters) and the towering mortadella sandwich, both local favourites that reflect the city’s diverse influences.

Also included is a visit to the CTN, a cultural and gastronomic complex that celebrates the traditions of Brazil’s Northeast. Designed as a gathering place for São Paulo’s Northeastern diaspora community, it recreates the region’s festive atmosphere with colourful facades, rustic architectural details and open-air spaces reminiscent of the small-town square found throughout Northeastern Brazil. The CTN showcases the culinary heritage of the Northeast of Brazil, with dishes rooted in Portuguese, African and indigenous traditions. Typical dishes include carne de sol, tapioca, baião de dois and other regional specialities, often accompanied by live music and cultural performances.
