Excursion

Canoe tour

This excursion is one of the most rewarding ways to experience the coastline of Fernando de Noronha. Conducted in a Polynesian-style outrigger canoe—a long, narrow craft fitted with a lateral stabilising float and paddled in synchrony by participants—the activity combines light physical exercise with opportunities for marine wildlife observation. Early morning departures offer favourable conditions for sighting spinner dolphins as they return from the open ocean, in addition to seabirds and other marine species.

The route covers approximately 4 to 6 kilometres, depending on sea conditions, and follows a scenic stretch of coastline passing coastal landmarks such as Air France and Rugido do Leão, as well as the beaches of Praia do Cachorro, Praia do Meio and Praia da Conceição. At the latter, there is a brief pause for photographs. Along the way, three natural pools can be observed: Buraco do Galego, Lasca da Velha and Morro de Fora, whose clear waters and volcanic rock formations illustrate the island’s geological character.

Prior to departure, participants receive a comprehensive beach briefing. This introduction explains the structure of the canoe, paddling techniques, safety procedures, tides and navigation, as well as the traditions associated with outrigger canoeing. Guidance is also provided on responsible conduct in the presence of marine wildlife, in line with the environmental regulations governing the archipelago.

Departures are scheduled at 05:00, 08:00, 10:00 and 16:00, with a minimum of three participants required. The excursion is suitable for beginners, as it is led by an experienced instructor and all necessary equipment is provided.
