Visitors will marvel at how many breathtaking waterfalls and natural pools can be found in the space of this 4.6km day hike. Guided through verdant forest of the Serra da Bodoquena walkers stop to admire eight different natural waterfalls, of which four are suitable for swimming. The trail takes a total of five hours to complete and its difficulty has been classified as medium to high. The mountain’s famously crystal blue waters have a high mineral content that leaves calcium deposits in their wake. The results can be seen in the sculptural limestone formations that win the Boca da Onça its renown for the ethereal lunar-like beauty of its waterways. At one of the stops, Buraco do Macaco, visitors swim through a tunnel to enter an underground cave pool whose roof is open onto the sky and into which cascades a seven metre high waterfall.
The excursion culminates in a view of the waterfall that gives the excursion its name, the Boca da Onça, the highest in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, a 156 metre sheer drop down the forested cliff face. For thrillseekers, the excursion offers the option of a hairraising 90 metre abseil directly down into the forest below (for those aged 12 and over) with a safety training session beforehand. Back at the reception visitors can enjoy a relaxation area with hammocks, a large swimming pool and a restaurant that serves up local cuisine. The tour company is environmentally-minded, taking cares to protect the local biodiversity.
