Supporting the Golden Lion Tamarin

At Ideia Tours, our commitment to sustainability and the protection of Brazil’s fragile eco-systems takes on many different forms. Recently, we initiated a regular donation in support of the Associação Mico-Leão-Dourado (AMLD), an alliance whose primary objective is to maintain Rio de Janeiro State’s Atlantic Rainforests; the natural habitat of Brazil’s Golden Lion Tamarin, a beautiful though under-threat monkey found only among these trees.

Of the four species which make up the Lion Tamarin family, it is the Golden variety which call the forests north of Rio de Janeiro home, with their closely related cousins being found around São Paulo, Bahia and Paraná, though all enjoying a similar climate and topography. Through observation and record keeping, a greater understanding of their social networks and - above all - the preservation of the forest in which they live, AMLD aims to boost the dwindling population of this native species well above its current number, of 3,500. Their ultimate goal is to increase the size of protected forest space, ensure the monkey’s safety and health, ultimately leading to a greater number of individuals to be found there, something which we at Ideia Tours fully support!
