Rafting on the Macaé River

Set amidst the mountains and Atlantic Forest near Macaé, in the interior of Rio de Janeiro state, Barra do Sana provides a striking natural setting for an exhilarating rafting experience on the Macaé River. Away from the beaches and coastal landscapes for which the region is best known, the excursion reveals a very different environment of forest-covered hills, rivers and abundant vegetation.

The journey to Barra do Sana takes approximately one hour by car, arriving at the rafting base overlooking the Macaé River. From here, participants take to the water for a descent of approximately two hours, negotiating the river’s currents and rapids under the guidance of experienced instructors. Combining stretches of gently flowing water with white-water sections, the activity offers plenty of excitement while allowing participants to experience the river and surrounding landscape at close quarters.

The Macaé River is particularly well suited to rafting, and this stretch passes through an area of well-preserved Atlantic Forest. The dense vegetation along the riverbanks and mountainous surroundings provide a dramatic backdrop throughout the descent, bringing participants into close contact with the natural environment.

Rafting at Barra do Sana provides an invigorating contrast to a stay on the coast, combining physical activity and teamwork with the opportunity to experience the Atlantic Forest from a very different perspective.
