​The Historical Walking Tour provides an introduction to the cultural and architectural heritage of Fernando de Noronha through a guided exploration of Vila dos Remédios, the island’s oldest settlement. Located on a hillside overlooking the ocean, this historic village forms the administrative and cultural centre of the archipelago and preserves many of its most significant colonial-era structures.

Often described as an open-air museum, Vila dos Remédios brings together a concentration of historic buildings dating primarily from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, when the island functioned as a strategic military outpost and later as a penal colony. The walking route passes traditional houses, churches and preserved ruins, allowing participants to understand the different phases of the island’s occupation and subsequent development. Among the architectural highlights are the Church of Our Lady of Remedies, one of the oldest religious structures on the island, and the remains of defensive fortifications built to protect the archipelago from foreign incursions.

Throughout the walk, qualified guides provide historical context, explaining the island’s role in the Portuguese colonial defence system, its later administrative functions and its transition into a protected natural area and UNESCO World Heritage Site. The elevated position of the village also offers viewpoints overlooking the surrounding coastline, reinforcing the strategic importance of the settlement.

The excursion has a duration of approximately two hours and is classified as easy, with a relaxed walking pace suitable for most participants. Please note that entrance fees to specific historic sites, including the fort, are not included and may be paid separately where applicable.
